I was so proud of all my efforts and so thankful for all of the support that I received from everyone who watched my matches. There is so much kindness and support from so many people when you play in India. I feel truly lucky to visit a country that hadn’t even really been on my radar to visit before pickleball took me there. It is definitely a pinch me moment seeing myself on banners, especially that of Skechers, one of the biggest main-stream brands in the world. It’s something I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of, that I never take for granted. Due to capacity restrictions this year PBE split the older age categories out into competing on the Monday / Tuesday / Wednesday. I loved having a couple of days where I wasn’t running around between matches like a headless chicken and could watch and support friends in their brackets. Pickleball is truly a unique sport where you can have people of all ages and all abilities competing in the same tournaments. Winning a medal is something that is achievable whether you are a 70 year who has played for a few years, a 13 year old junior player that plays every day or a wheelchair athlete that has just taken up the sport. I lost in the first round in a high quality, tight, 3 set match against a very accomplished player in Milan Rane. During the match I’d struggled mentally and definitely carried those struggles into my back draw singles match with Pei (we travelled across the world together only to play each other!). I went down to Pei and definitely held onto the doubts that had crept in that day for the mixed doubles day too. Mixed doubles day with James was probably one of my worst days on a pickleball court (sorry James). My play, although not great, was probably better than I was giving myself credit for. However, that day I had told myself I had no ability to do anything on court and that mindset was one that wasn’t going to get me very far – and it didn’t! We ended up going 1 and 2 and quickly finding the Margarita stand! A positive takeaway was that I learnt a lot about mindset that day and I know it will be a good learning for the long-term. A special thank you to Jared Franklin and Aaron Stahl who looked after our group so well during the event. We were lucky enough to be able to watch the finals on Zing Zang court.
